Who is the Antichrist and When Will He Come?

“Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day [the Second Coming] will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction.”
– 2 Thessalonians 2:3

The month of December is renowned for its primary holiday. Even though Christmas is a manmade holiday, Christians can use the season to initiate a discussion about Jesus’ birth, ministry, death, ascension, and return. There is a lot to talk about if you can find an opportunity to do so!  Although few people were aware of Jesus’ birth, when he returns, the Bible predicts “every eye will see Him!” (Revelation 1:7) Before Jesus returns, another being called the Antichrist will first appear on Earth. The Antichrist (Lucifer) will not appear in the same manner that Jesus appears. Jesus and the Father will not touch the Earth at the Second Coming. Instead, they will hover above the Earth and as Earth rotates beneath them, every eye will see them on a glorious throne. (Matthew 26:64) When Jesus returns, He will call the righteous dead to life (John 5:28) and the righteous living will then be caught up with them to meet the Lord in the air! (1 Thessalonians 4:13–18)

The righteous saints meet the Lord in the air because Jesus and the Father will not descend to Earth at the Second Coming! Instead, the Father, Son, Holy Spirit, and the redeemed will leave this planet and head for the city, New Jerusalem. In this manner, Jesus will keep the promise He made just before His death: “In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” (John 14:2–3, italics mine) In this verse, Jesus promised to take us to be with Him. He did not promise to return to Earth and stay here with us.

Unfortunately, many Christians have not considered John 14:2–3.  They believe Jesus will live on Earth for a thousand years after the Second Coming.  However, the Bible teaches that prior to the Second Coming, the Antichrist will loosely imitate the Second Coming many times. Because communication will be limited between different parts of the world, Lucifer will descend with a giant cloud of brilliant angels over large cities. People in different regions of the world will see him arrive at various times. The important difference between Jesus’ and the devil’s appearing is that the devil will be unable to do what he intends to do if he stays up in the sky. The devil has to spend some time on Earth to accomplish his evil goals.

The Man of Lawlessness

Paul indicates “the man of lawlessness” (Lucifer, the devil) will put on a big show with counterfeit miracles, signs, and wonders. (2 Thessalonians 2:9–12) Millions of evil angels (actually demons) will herald the fake news, “Almighty God has arrived! Come out to see him! He has come to establish the kingdom of God on Earth and there will be a thousand years of peace and prosperity for everyone!” The wicked will be excited by this announcement. Yet, we can only understand this deception if we learn the events that occur prior to the Antichrist’s appearance. The first four trumpets will devastate Earth and ruin its many infrastructures. People who live then will be in very primitive, miserable conditions. I believe the devil and his angels will appear about two and one half years after the first four trumpets occur. Consider the devil’s appearance as John saw it:

“The fifth angel [that stands before God in Heaven (Revelation 8:2)] sounded his trumpet, and I [John] saw a star [a term used to describe angels (Revelation 1:20), a brilliant being] that had fallen from the sky to the Earth [cast out of Heaven]. [At the appointed time,] The star was given the key to the shaft of the Abyss. When he [the devil] opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it [a great cloud of angels appeared in the sky, the cloud was so dense that it looked] like the smoke from a gigantic furnace. The Sun and sky were darkened by the smoke from the Abyss. And out of the smoke locusts [millions of angels with wings, the number of them was so great that they looked like a giant swarm of locusts] came down upon the Earth and were given power [from God to hurt certain people, the harm they caused was] like that of scorpions of the Earth.” (Revelation 9:1–3, insertions mine)

In John’s day, the Abyss was thought to be a mysterious region located beneath a flat Earth. People believed that demons dwelled in the Abyss and volcanoes served as chimneys for the fires that burned down there. The shaft (or bottomless pit) of the Abyss was considered to be a hole that went through the flat Earth. In this case, the star is Lucifer who was cast out of Heaven. As the angel king of the Abyss, he is given a key so that he and his followers can escape. This language indicates that Jesus deliberately and precisely controls when the Antichrist appears.

“They [the demons] were told not to harm the grass of the Earth or any plant [crops] or tree [they are not permitted to physically destroy anything], but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads. They were not given power to kill them, but only to torture them for five months. And the agony they suffered was like that of the sting of a scorpion when it strikes a man. [The torture was so great that] During those days men will seek death, but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them. The locusts [the angels from the Abyss] looked like [well-armed] horses prepared for battle. On their heads they [the demons] wore something like crowns of gold [showing authority over mankind], and their faces resembled human faces. Their hair was [long] like women’s hair, and their teeth were [deadly, powerful] like lions’ teeth. They had breastplates like breastplates of iron [they were invincible, human beings could not stop them, injure them, or kill them], and the sound of their wings was like the thundering of many horses [very loud] and chariots rushing into battle [they had intimidating power]. They had tails and stings like scorpions, and in their tails they had power to torment people for five months. They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss, [the star who received the key] whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon. [Whether Jew or Gentile, his title means: The Destroyer.] The first woe [the first curse on the wicked] is past; two other woes are yet to come [upon them].” (Revelation 9:4–12, insertions and italics mine)

John saw a representation of Lucifer and his demons in the same way that he saw the seven-headed beast in Revelation 13:1. If you remember, the seven-headed beast looked like a leopard, but it had feet like a bear, and a mouth like a lion. These features are representations that describe Babylon’s powers. Lucifer and his demons will not physically look like locusts having scorpion tails. Instead, the devil and his angels will be brilliant, glorious beings with a human-like appearance, because like mankind, they were made in God’s image. (Genesis 1:26; Job 38:7) The demons from the Abyss will be much larger and more powerful than humans. People will not be able to control, stop, or kill them. God will release them from the Abyss and give them power to rule over the whole world for about fourteen months.

God only releases the devil and his angels from the spirit realm (the Abyss), after the world has rejected the clearest evidence of His will and higher authority. When the fifth trumpet occurs, Lucifer will confront each wicked person with the clearest evidence of his will and authority. Standing about fifteen feet tall and deceptively cloaked in brilliant light and charming benevolence, the devil will tell the wicked that he is “Almighty God.” I believe that Lucifer is physically “15 feet tall” using the following texts. Psalm 8:3–5 reveals that Jesus created man “smaller” or “shorter” than the angels and 1 Kings 6:23–26 documents that Solomon constructed a life-sized likeness of the two angels for the Most Holy Place.

To prove the lie that he is “Almighty God,” the devil will call fire down from the sky on command. (Revelation 13:13) The devil will declare he has come to establish God’s kingdom on Earth and he invites everyone to join him for 1,000 years of peace and prosperity. The devil is called “the false prophet” for this reason. Behind the scenes, demons will arrest and torture everyone caught refusing to worship the devil for blasphemy and insubordination.

The Beast from the Abyss is the Antichrist

In Revelation 9:1-11, John saw “the angel king of the Abyss” released from the Abyss. In Revelation 13:11, John saw a beast come up out of the Earth (inferring this beast will come up through a shaft in the Earth). In Revelation 11:7, John says the beast from the Abyss will kill the Two Witnesses and in Revelation 17:8, John says the wicked will be astonished when they SEE the beast from the Abyss because currently, he is not visible. Putting these pieces together, I conclude at the fifth trumpet, Jesus releases “a higher power.” At this point, the devil and his angels will physically appear and descend from the sky. They will torture everyone except those having the seal of God as they take control of the world and rule with absolute authority. Paul calls the devil, the man of lawlessness in 2 Thessalonians 2 because he will not be subject to manmade laws.

When the five months allotted for the fifth trumpet end, the sixth trumpet will sound. At that time, Jesus will permit the devil to kill one-third of mankind. (Revelation 9:15)  When he receives this power, the devil will demand a one-world government be formed. Lucifer will set himself up as King of kings and Lord of lords and no one can stop him. He will demand everyone who refuses to worship him be put to death. To make his dominion complete, the devil will abolish and outlaw the religions and governments of the world. There will be one faith, one Lord, and one baptism. At this time, the 144,000 will announce an inflammatory third message to counter this global development: “If anyone worships [obeys] the beast [from the Abyss] and his image [his one-world government] and receives his mark [a tattoo] on the forehead or on the [right] hand, he, too, will drink of the wine of God’s fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. He will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb.” (Revelation 14:9–10, insertions mine)  The devil’s one-world government is described in Revelation 13 as an image (or a likeness of the government set up by the seven-headed beast) because it will be similar. The seven-headed beast will be a global church/state directed by seven heads, but the devil’s image will be a global church/state directed by an evil impostor claiming to be Almighty God.

The Mark of the Beast

If we want to understand the mark of the beast, we have to understand the dire situation that will exist on Earth at the sixth trumpet. After the devil abolishes the religions and governments of the world, he will establish ten “puppet” kings as task masters. He will give these kings an assignment to build God’s kingdom. Everyone must work on this project or be punished for sedition. The devil will resort to an ancient method for dealing with large numbers of people to enforce his laws and manage his subjects. He will divide the people of Earth into groups of 1,000. (Exodus 18:24–26, Numbers 31:48–54, Deuteronomy 1:15, 1 Samuel 22:7, 1 Chronicles 27:1)  One person will be chosen from each group to serve as its captain. After the devil divides the people, he will tell each captain that the first 666 people willing to receive a tattoo on the right hand showing “666” can live.  All others must be put to death. (Revelation 9:15)  This gruesome tactic will expose those who have the slightest reservation about worshiping the devil and obeying his laws. People who immediately accept the devil’s mark will live.

The phrase, “the mark of the beast” is a poor translation from the Greek language.  The phrase should be translated, “the engraving of the beast.” The Greek word: charagma is translated “mark” in English, but the Greek word means an engraving, such as an engraving on a tombstone or a tattoo, an engraving on the flesh.  A tattoo is a very simple, low tech, easy way to control people in large numbers. Hitler tattooed millions of prisoners and the devil will do the same.  A tattoo is not reversible, transferable, or subject to theft or counterfeiting. To conduct business (some buying and selling will be possible at that time), a tattoo showing “666” on the right hand will be required.  The dire circumstances on Earth at the time of the sixth trumpet require strong action.

The Bible also describes Lucifer’s government as a great prostitute (Revelation 17:1), riding on (controlling) the seven-headed beast. This caricature indicates that everyone who goes along with the devil to survive will behave as a prostitute. A prostitute is a person without morals. A prostitute is willing to violate his or her body for something even though he or she knows that doing so is evil. The parallel will be obvious. When the mark of the beast is offered, billions of people who refused to love the truth, people who refused to trust in God and depend on Him for survival will sell their souls and bodies to the devil to survive. This is a profound lesson found in Revelation’s story: When people reach a point where they value life more than righteousness, the Creator of life has determined that such people are unfit to live!

  1. Hello QueSiB72:

As I understand it, the fifth trumpet occurs about 2.5 years into the Great Tribulation. When the devil is released from the Abyss (the spirit realm) so that he and his demons can physically appear before the people on Earth, there will be three groups of people on Earth:

    1. The saints (who will be opposed to worshiping or obeying the devil)
    2. The religious wicked (people who will believe the devil’s deception and worship the devil)
    3. The non-religious wicked (people who will refuse to obey God or the devil)

During the fifth trumpet, the devil and his demons will eliminate most of the third group through torture. He can’t hurt the saints (they have the seal of God) and he won’t hurt the religious wicked (they are already deceived).

God releases the devil so that if possible, some of the wicked will repent and be saved! (notice my emphasis >>> <<>>For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie<<< and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness."

When wicked people see the lawless devil and his demons (they will not respect any laws made by man, hence the term, lawless one) and as they observe his higher authority over mankind, some people will wake up and realize their need of a Savior!

Long ago, the Father purposefully and deliberately designed the seven trumpets to save the maximum number of people and at the same time, awaken a world of people to the grace and majesty of Jesus!

  2. Why does God give Lucifer the authority over mankind? Does he want to say that that he is going to harvest the earth and separate the good shaft and the bad?is that the test mankind is going to undergo?

  3. Hello Bevinda:

    Thank you for your question.

The Great Tribulation will be caused by an outpouring of God’s wrath. God’s wrath will begin with the first four trumpets (described in Revelation 8:2-13). As I understand it, these judgments will destroy a large portion of the Earth and kill about two billion people.

During this time, God will send into the world 144,000 prophets. He will speak to everyone on Earth through His prophets and a gospel requiring faith and obedience will be delivered. (Revelation 14:6,7)

During the same time, the religious and political leaders of the world will hurriedly create a crisis government for the purpose of appeasing God’s wrath. The whole world will be traumatized and overwhelmed and the solution to resolving God’s wrath will be thought to be the enforcement of laws mandating that God be honored, respected, worshiped and all immoral conduct must be immediately terminated.

God will speak through the 144,000, telling the survivors what He wants.

The crisis government (represented as a seven-headed beast in Revelation 13:1) will tell the world what it thinks God wants.

The problem will be that what God demands, no one will want to do. What the seven-headed beast demands will be far more comfortable and doable.

Therefore, a conflict between the 144,000 and the seven-headed beast (also called Babylon) will rage for about 2.5 years as I understand it. At the end of the 2.5 years, everyone will have pretty much made their decision as to whom they will obey.

Then, God releases the devil and gives him authority over the world so that those people who have resisted God’s demands (presented through the 144,000) will fully realize that there are higher powers than human beings. The devil will masquerade all over Earth as Almighty God. After the devil and his demons have physically appeared, the choice will be very simple:

Worship the God in Heaven as He demands or worship the god on Earth (the devil) as he demands.

If a person chooses to obey and worship God on His seventh day Sabbath as He demands in the fourth commandment, he will most likely be killed by the devil and his demons.

If a person chooses to worship and obey the devil, he will escape the devil’s torture but he will be surely killed by Jesus at the Second Coming (if he is still alive).

So the release of the devil will firm up every decision. The saints will obey and worship God as He demands and the wicked will, to avoid persecution and death, worship the devil.

When Jesus comes, the sheep will be separated from the goats!

  4. The beast from the abyss, Abaddon/Apollyon, is not Satan, but Satan will give him his power. Satan is not currently in the abyss, but roaming the world. Satan and Abaddon are two separate entities. The following scene comes from a meeting of the heavenly divine council. Job 1:7 The LORD said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered the LORD, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.” Satan was also present to tempt our Messiah. He will continue to accuse mankind until the return of our Messiah, at which time Abaddon/Apollyon and his false prophet will go into perdition and Satan will be incarcerated in the abyss until the end of the millennial reign of Christ.

  5. Good Afternoon, Mr. Wilson. I’ve known about these topics for a couple of years now and I always try my best to do and follow the right thing, but don’t always succeed due to how bad the temptations are in this generation. But when I read this, it opened my eyes again. It made me realize that our faith in God needs to be stronger than ever. My only question is, and mind you, I’m a “born again” Christian as well, is Christianity it really the way to go? This question seems to always come to my mind and with all the multiple and different religions out there, I just want to know why Christianity is the way to go? I know the scriptures is one of the main reason why, but I want to know more. I just want the truth and to follow what Jesus wants us to follow.

    1. Hello LeySheer:

Religion is the problem not the answer. I’m convinced there will be many people in heaven who have never heard the name of Jesus because they do naturally what the Holy Spirit leads them to do. Yes, Jesus’ sacrifice covers them, but that doesn’t mean they know who he is. This is good news! It means we all have a chance! (Romans 2:14)

      Regarding various religions…

      1) According to Genesis 17, the God of Abraham refused to pass His covenant to Ishmael, choosing the lineage of Isaac and Jacob instead. Moslems are a devout people but don’t believe in the deity of Jesus.

      2) Next, the Jews in Christ’s day had exalted Moses to the point of usurping God’s place. They had taken the writings of Moses, shrouded them with false ideas, which caused a false sense of righteousness and further closed their minds to the truth Jesus was trying to reveal to them. Jews are a devout people but deny the deity of Jesus.

      3) Last, according to Paul and James, God gave up on biological Israel and redefined who true Israel was because the Jews had made a mess of his laws. They were to be a light to the world yet ended up worse than the heathen nations who lived around them. Christianity sprang up as a result of the teachings of Jesus. (Ephesians 1:1 and James 2:1)

As you can see, religion always distorts the truth about God. Since sin damages human beings, it is inevitable that all religious structures eventually become corrupt. God is far more generous with the diversity of man than religion allows. Religion by its very nature takes a set of beliefs and creates an exclusive God, then people use this view of God to elevate their religion above all others. Christianity has, unfortunately, done the same thing.

What Jesus wants us to follow…
The answer is in having and growing in a relationship with Jesus. True Christianity is following Jesus teachings and living by faith like he did. I encourage you to listen for and follow the prompting of the Holy Spirit in your life. It’s the only way to live as Jesus did. This is quite different than conforming to the rules of a faith or denomination. The teachings of Jesus and the prompting of the Holy Spirit will lead you to where you need to be.

      I hope this helps!
      Best regards

  6. Hello LeySheer:

You have asked a very good question, “I just want to know why Christianity is the way to go?” For many people, this is a frustrating question.

Christianity by definition is a way of life, a commitment to Jesus Christ as deity and His teachings — which are unlike the teachings of all other religious leaders. Christianity is not a religious organization, although Christians have many religious organizations. Christianity is not a culture or a language, although every Christian has a culture and a language. In the purest sense of the word, a Christian is committed to the teachings of Jesus and the only book that contains His teachings is the Bible.

Many Christians do not realize that Jesus is the God of the Old Testament. Jesus spoke the Ten Commandments from Mt. Sinai. He delivered Israel out of Egypt. (1 Corinthians 10:4) Jesus is the Creator of everything that exists. (Colossians 1:16) Jesus is deity. (Philippians 2:6, Isaiah 40:28) Jesus is the only redeemer of sinners. (Isaiah 44:24, 48:17, 54:5) Jesus existed before everything and He will exist if everything disappears! (Isaiah 44:6; Colossians 1;17) Finally, Jesus was sent to Earth so that through Him sinners could have everlasting life. (John 3:16) Jesus died, but now He lives forever and He alone has the keys to the grave. (Revelation 1:17,18) No other religious leader or god comes close to Jesus.

If you are willing to accept by faith that what is said of Jesus in the Bible is true, if you are willing to embrace and apply His teachings in your life, you will be blessed more than you can imagine! “The proof is in the pudding,” as they say. Jesus has more to offer than any other religious leader or religious system and the really good news is this: Unlike the many and various Gods worshiped around the world today, Jesus has promised to return to Earth and take all who trust in Him to Heaven!

John 14:1-3 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God ; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”

LeySheer, the Bible is unique because it reveals things about God otherwise unknown. It also tells us how Earth came to be, how sin occurred, why sorrow, illness and death occurs and of God’s plan to redeem those who are honest in heart and follow the voice of the Holy Spirit. I hope you will read this study on the Trinity, it may answer many questions for you! https://www.wake-up.org/Alpha/Trinity.pdf

You may also enjoy this short study: Are you Ready for the Second Coming?

    https://www.wake-up.org/Alpha/SecondComing.pdf

Finally, following Jesus is the way to go because the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are working together to adopt us as their children!

Galatians 5:19-25 “The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”

    I hope this helps!

  8. What will the other princes parts be in this. Because if im not mistaken there are 7 princes, one for each deadly sin(if im wrong please correct me this is not my most studied mythology) Satan for wrath, asmodeus for lust, mammon for greed, leviathan for envy, belphegor for sloth, beelzebub for gluttony and last is lucifer for pride
Youve mentioned lucifer many times but if i recall you didnt mention any other except for satan i think

If you can clear up my confusion that would be great thank

  9. Hello Azrael:

To my knowledge, the Bible says nothing about seven evil princes, one prince for each of the seven deadly sins. The Catholic Church invented the concept of “seven deadly sins. ” The Bible teaches that the wages for any sin is death. (Romans 6:23) Looking at Genesis 3, and knowing what we know today about the power of sin’s curse, who would have thought that the consequences of eating forbidden fruit could be so profound?

For what it may be worth, the Bible does offer a list of seven things that God hates:

Prov 6:16 There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him:
Prov 6:17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,
Prov 6:18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil,
Prov 6:19 a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.

Finally, the Bible indicates that Satan (aka the devil, Lucifer, the great red dragon, the man of lawlessness, the false prophet) is the archenemy of God and he has many followers (fallen angels, demons and wicked human beings). The Bible says the devil appeared before Eve in the Garden of Eden in the form of a serpent and he and his angels will also appear before all mankind as glorious and majestic beings during the Great Tribulation, at the fifth trumpet. (Revelation 9:1-11)

  10. Hello smainga14:

According to my understanding of Revelation 13 and 17, there is no “true church.” (The word “church” as used here, defines an organized religious body.) The book of Revelation indicates all of the religious systems on Earth today are false and blasphemous. All religious systems are far away from God and His many of His truths. Of course, it is fair to say that all authentic Christian church groups have some element of truth (and many fine members), but in totality, no religious organization has it all. If you wish to study further into this matter, please look at these two articles:

    https://www.wake-up.org/jesus-final-victory-book/the-angels-first-visit.html

    https://www.wake-up.org/beast/the-seven-headed-beast.html

A Pew survey was conducted a short time ago on “church going people” and more than half of the people said they do not agree with everything their church teaches. How can this be? More than half of the people surveyed believe their church approves or teaches things that are not Biblical. Why would a person remain in such a church? I can think of three compelling reasons. First, attending a particular church can be a family tradition and leaving could bring discord (unending religious wars) within the family. Second, attending church fulfills a social need and leaving could result in shunning and many broken relationships. Third, since more than half of the members in other churches do not believe everything their church teaches, why change churches only to find that you will disagree with certain things it teaches?

I view church attendance as a stepping stone toward knowing and worshiping God. Attending church is a pilgrimage in spirit and truth rather than reaching a destination. Christians should first and foremost, be seekers of God’s will and His truth. Christians should search the Word of God for instruction in righteousness and unfolding truth. It seems that most church organizations are either focused on remaining changeless or they are on a mission to get members and build a financial base. God does not measure success as man measures success. It is far easier to grow a big church (with pomp, music and motivational speakers) than to solemnly teach people how to overcome the sinful nature and live as a disciple of Jesus.

No church is true or perfect. No church has all of God’s truth. Understanding this to be the case, I recommend that a person attend any given church for as long as it upholds the Word of God and the Bible is closely examined and exalted. As long as a person is spiritually fed by humble clergy to walk with the Lord, attendees have nothing to fear. When/if it comes time to move on, the Holy Spirit will guide you into all truth if you are willing to go where truth leads. If you are inspired to honor the Lord with a life of love, faith and service, church attendance is doing all it is can do.

Remember this: Contrary to what some churches say, the Bible teaches that no church offers salvation. No church has the keys to Heaven or Hell. The person who decides our eternal fate is Jesus:

2 Corinthians 5:10 “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.”

    I hope this helps!
